The back of an old country store next to a pot-bellied stove, sitting on a wooden pop case, cigar smoke in the air, and a cardboard box as the table; this is how the old-timers recall their first memories of the regionally-developed card game known as “Pig”. The Tournament was held Saturday, February 24th, 2007, at High-Noon. Brandon Smith, a native of Fentress County was this years champion. The Eighth Annual World Pig Championship will once again be held at the old Forbus General Store in Pall Mall, Tennessee.
The tournament is open to everyone that knows the values and loves to play the game. No entry fee is required and we expect close to 100 players and between 500-1000 spectators this year! The players will draw for partners before each game and with the time allowed usually nine or ten games are played.
The origin of this game is unknown but everyone knows the rules trace it back to Pickett and Fentress Counties. In the past tournaments we have had 6 states represented and the player’s ages ranged from 13 to 91. Bankers, Lawyers, farmers, teacher, carpenters, loggers, and even the occasional U.S. Representative have been competitors in the past.
